The Five Best Restaurants in Tempe

You know the moment. The one that strikes fear into everyone in the household. When you open the fridge at dinner time, and there is nothing of substance inside. No food as far as the eye can see. Sure, in this case, that’s about two feet wide and maybe as many deep, but hey there’s no food! Now is the time to start looking into the family budget and finding something quick, or the mutiny will happen. Worry not, oh reader mine, because today we are working our way through the five best restaurants in Tempe, Arizona. Whether you are a local or just passing through, these are must eat locations!

CAFÉ LALIBELA

This destination is sure to surprise and tantalize, Café Lalibela specializes in authentic Ethiopian cuisine. For those not in the know, Ethiopian food is built around the premise of injera,a spongey flat-bread upon which everything is served, and wat, hearty sauces made of meat and vegetables. No plates exist at Café Lalibela, nor will you find forks and knives. Rip off a piece of injera and scoop up some wat. It is an experience like no other. Be sure to wash your hands before and after the meal, while the tasty morsels maybe a nice surprise on your fingers, they don’t impress guests as much.

LA BOCCA URBAN PIZZERIA

Because there is really nothing quite as good in the world as a good pizza, La Bocca is a brilliant destination for everyone. Whether you need a more upscale and familiar lunch, or just a good place for a first date, La Bocca’s menu is sure to help impress. From more traditional things like bruschetta and pastas to the more inventive list of original craft pizzas, there is something here for everyone.

RULA BULA IRISH PUB

It isn’t every day that a pub finds its way onto a list of must see restaurants. This pub, however, has little in common with the traditional image of a pub, well at least an American pub. Rula Bula is an incredibly fun and lively dining experience, deriving from the Irish Gaelic tradition of “ri ra agus ruaille buaille,” which means uproar and commotion. If you are just looking for a quiet place to grab a drink, this may not be the place for you. If, however, you are looking for a lively atmosphere and the opportunity to make a friend or two, there are few places better.

THE CHUCKBOX

No restaurant guide is ever complete until it includes a cash-only burger joint. Catering to those in search of the most delicious and mouth-watering burger in town. The atmosphere itself is likely to evoke a western sensibility – calling back to the John Ford Westerns of old. The food is prepared over a fire grill to allow the smoke to flavor the meat, an experience that is next to impossible to find in any other establishment. This neighborhood establishment is one that will never disappoint and is well worth at least one visit.
